Access and Location

  • The site is a disused room within the Peckham Rye Station building. 
  • The exhibition space is located on the Second Floor directly above the station ticket hall.
  • Access is via a doorway to the left of the main station entrance in the Station Forecourt off the pedestrianised station way.
  • Access to the exhibition space is via a stairwell, which includes a sturdy bannister and good lighting.
  • There is no step at the door threshold into the foyer area.
  • There are 20 steps between the Ground Floor and First Floor landing – divided into 6 steps / landing / 7 steps/ landing / 7 steps. 
  • There are 21 steps between First Floor and Second Floor Level – divided into 7 steps / landing / 7 steps/ landing / 7 steps.
  • The Second Floor landing leads directly into the main exhibition space (with no threshold step) via a narrow doorway – 715mm wide x 1975mm high.
  • The exhibition space consists of uneven timber floorboards – note that some boards are slightly different heights to their adjacent boards due to the age of the building which may present a trip hazard. 
  • Visitors are free to walk around the main exhibition space. 
  • Some chairs are provided in the exhibition space for visitors.
  • There are toilet facilities (including an accessible toilet - 775mm wide x 1070mm high) in an adjacent room to the main exhibition space. There are no steps between the Main exhibition space and the toilet facilities.

Important information for wheelchair users and step-free individuals

Step-free access to the exhibition space is possible via a door connecting the room to Platform 3 at Peckham Rye Station. However the platform is not accessible via the station itself and advanced arrangements need to be made to access/egress Platform 3 via a train from accessible stations South of Peckham Rye Station.

The closest accessible station to Platform 3 is Crofton Park station operated by Thameslink Services. The Artangel team is more than willing to help with bespoke travel journeys and will do whatever is possible to meet your access and/or communication needs when visiting. Please call us on our office number in advance, open Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, on 020 7713 1400.

​Lighting

  • Sarah Sze's The Waiting Room contains bright, flashing imagery that may cause discomfort and /or seizures for those with light sensitivity and/or photosensitive epilepsy. The readings will take place within the exhibition space.
  • The entrance and stairwell are well lit.
  • The main exhibition space is blacked out (no natural light). The only light is from the video projectors incorporated into the installation and projecting onto the walls and ceiling of the space.
  • Artangel’s Front of House team will have torches to assist visitors with movement through the space if required. 
  • Some of the projections move slowly in space.
  • There may be some flashing imagery within the video content

Getting to the exhibition site by public transport

The exhibition space is adjacent to Peckham Rye Station. You need to exit the station in order to access the exhibition.

Peckham Rye Station is served by London Overground as well as Southern, Thameslink and Southeastern trains. The Waiting Room is serviced by numerous bus routes on Rye Lane including 78, 63, 12, 343, 197, P13 and P12.

When leaving The Waiting Room, step-free audiences must continue their journey North via Platform 3 to Denmark Hill and then head back South to their parking location.

Cycling

There are cycle racks in Holly Grove.

There are no Santander Cycle docking stations in the immediate area.

Assistance animals

Assistance animals can be accommodated within the exhibition space. Please call us in advance and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Toilets

There are toilet facilities on Platform 4 of Peckham Rye Station. For accesible toilets, please speak to Front of House.

Fire Safety

An evacuation plan for the site is provided for. Should it become necessary to evacuate either of the exhibition spaces, Artangel staff will provide assisted escape from all areas and alert the emergency services.

Mobility impaired visitors should ensure that they visit with an accompanying person to assist them in the event of an evacuation.

Capacity

Maximum Capacity within the Waiting Room is 70 persons.
