Access and Movement

A Thousand Words for Weather consists of a number of audio installations and interventions located on the 4th, 5th and 6th floors of Senate House Library.

Unfortunately, the installation located in the Art Library is only accessible via stairs from the 5th Floor. All other installations are accessible via the library’s lifts.

The Periodicals Room acts as the centrepiece of the audio installations and will play during library opening hours, along with the other installations. The soundtrack in this room can be accessed via headsets at various listening posts inside, available to use throughout the day. Some of the listening posts are on the mezzanine level (accessible only via stairs), however further listening stations are also available on the main floor level. The soundtrack is the same in all listening posts. Between 1.00pm – 1.55pm each day the sound will migrate onto speakers to gently fill the room before returning to the silence of the headsets.

A sound installation in the main stairwell is accessible via the landings on the 4th, 5th and 6th floor of the library.

Other installations throughout the library are accessible via the libraries main floors.

Please see Senate House Library’s accessibility page for more details.

Assistance Animals

Assistance Dogs for guidance are welcome.

Toilets

Toilets, including accessible toilets, are available within the Library.

Fire Safety

The emergency alarm is a continuous ringing bell. There are no visual alarms in the Library. In the event of an emergency evacuation, please leave the Library by the nearest exit if you are able to do so. Wheelchair users should wait by a Refuge Point. Staff will walk round the Library to alert users. If you are having difficulty reaching the refuge point, please alert a member of staff. If the alarm is a drill staff will inform you of this when they re-enter the building. In the event of a genuine fire alarm your presence at the refuge point will be reported to the fire brigade who will enter the building via the stairs to evacuate you.
