The significance of language to these human-animal acts of kin-making is present throughout the installation. Punctuating beds of tree bark, which evoke the woody mustiness of the library surroundings, are several totemesque poles made of smooth, carved willow. Inscribed on each are textual renditions of birdcalls, such as Sit-Eee! Sit-EE! and ploo! tree-tre-tre!, which attempt to translate these sonic variations into a linguistic confine. — Joseph Constable, Art Monthly, October 2017

The sculptural installation 'Song Posts (Dawn Chorus)' is a constellation of five repurposed telegraph poles inscribed with text translations of bird songs, clustered together in a bed of bark.

at Shetland Arts

Lerwick, 26 January – 10 March 2019

Andy Holden and Peter Holden's collaborative installation Natural Selection was presented at the Old Anderson High School site in Lerwick by Shetland Arts.  'Song Posts (Dawn Chorus)' was installed in the former high school alongside Holden's sculpture of a human scale Bower 'Bower (Untitled)' and the video installation 'A Natural History of Nest Building'.  The diverse birdlife that inhabits the Shetland Islands and the nearby Scottish mainland feature throughout the film.
