Over a period of four years of research and planning, Francis Alÿs produced a range of notes, diagrams, drawings and photographs which articulate the practical and conceptual shaping of the film Guards. What follows is a selection of material from that process, which culminated in the enactment of the scenario in the City of London July 2004. The edited film was completed in 2005.
