"Walking back through the other end of the hospital vault, there is a simple off-white hospital desk and a typical office chair. On the desk is the Medical Officer of Health's report, a tobacco box with the initials H.G. and a blunt red pencil. The papers chart the death toll of the influenza epidemic in 1919, with the mortality figures for the week ending 3 April in various European cities. Reference is made to the great post-war flu epidemic. On the desk an old wireless is broadcasting German propaganda. The spectator is expected to notice that he has moved forward in time. Besides the desk, a very expensive pair of brown leather riding boots and a whip, very carefully arranged on the floor and poorly illuminated by a 20 watt lightbulb hung from the ceiling."
