CAMERON JAMIE
Kranky Klaus / BB / Spook House

Talks and Events

November – December 2003

American artist and filmmaker Cameron Jamie’s investigations into violent suburban rituals are revealed in his new films Spook House and Kranky Klaus – urgent, unaffected and alarming journeys into the heart of vernacular culture. In Spook House Jamie explores the spook houses of Detroit in the days running up to Halloween and Kranky Klaus unearths unseasonally violent behaviour by a legendary beast called the Krampus at Christmas time in Austria. Both films will be screened with Jamie’s earlier acclaimed film about backyard wrestlers, BB. Jamie’s vertiginous takes on these rituals are heightened by the elemental sounds of highly influential band, The Melvins, who will play specially created live soundtrack music at each performance. A programme of talks and events will take place during November and December drawing on themes evolved from Jamie’s films.

Jamie is internationally acclaimed yet his work has never been shown before in the UK. The Melvins’ legendary hard noise conceptual rock has influenced bands from Nirvana to Infinite Livez. Chris Bohn (Reviews Editor at The Wire) and Darren Flook (Director of Contemporary Art, Entwistle, and Director of HOTEL) discuss Cameron Jamie’s past work, the singular sound of The Melvins, their collaboration and relationship to West Coast countercultures.

Interaction Projects
Two new Interaction projects developed in response to Jamie's work. David Blandy worked with young people from the Avenues Youth Project in Westminster to explore street slang and underground codes in Backslang. Artist Donald Urquhart, actor Chris Robson and performers from Cardboard Citizen created Noël Noir a twisted take on traditional pantomime.
