JONZI D presents
A Night Sublyrical: a unique dance and poetry performance in the dark
A Night Sublyrical was created and performed by nine non-professional dancers and poets. The performance was directed by Hip Hop theatre artist Jonzi D with choreographer Katie Pearson and lighting and technical designer Kirsten Reynolds. The project was developed from scratch from September 2006 over two months of weekly workshops experimenting with Hip Hop theatre techniques, character improvisation and lo-fi light trickery. Each performer was invited to create a character from the London night, improvising with the raw space of the Electrowerkz nightclub in Islington, London, as a readymade set.
A Night Sublyrical was presented in two fully booked performances at Electrowerkz in November 2006. As the audience were led through the dark, the performers conjured a strange and fantastical underworld London populated by different creatures of the night. This project was commissioned as part of Artangel Interaction’s Nights of London series of artist-led projects exploring the nocturnal city with the people who wake, work or watch over it.
